Typing ALT Codes 1 through 30 such as ☺ ☻ ♥ ♦ ♣ ♠

How do you type characters such as ( heart music note etc) using the keyboard?
Right now I do this by copy pasting from the web and it's tedious. In windows it could be done by ALT+xxx but it doesn work using SHIFT+CTRL+U+xxxx.
These are the characters I'm talking about.

in my ubuntu ctrl+shift+u works just fine,
¹²³¼½¾ can be done with alt+1..6 but

Thanks, pal, that's exactly what I was looking for. Is there some table for all the SHIFT+CTRL+U+FFFF codes? Any site or something. That would be great.

there is char map tool in accessories, which shows whole unicode space. You can find all codes there. You can try upgrading your keyboard layout to include some of these.
