I wanted to know your opinions about what is the best text editor, and what are the main differences between gedit and Kate (K Advanced Text Editor)
So what do you think?

Last time I tried opening a text with mixed up character sets (Latin1 and UTF-8), gedit just refuses to open the file. Kate handles it with no problem. OTOH Kate takes longer to load and not having investigated how to customize start-up appearance, I find it ugly.

Kate is a programming editor. It is a really serious tool which can do a lot more than gedit but it takes longer to load on my PC
