OpenOffice is now owned by Oracle. The development team of previous OpenOffice reformed and developed LibreOffice for the replacement. You can use LibreOffice as the alternative. LibreOffice is faster and more powerful.

It is up to the policy of Orcale. Nobody knows at the moment. However, the previous OpenOffice team is developed an alternative LibreOffice. It is the replacement of OpenOffice. LibreOffice is released under GPL v3.Originally Posted by Ominara

Beware that the PPA can lead to some troubles (they are not checked for compatibility with the whole flavor).
Personally, I prefer the vanilla version to be installed through the package manager (dpkg). See that one, it also applies to LibO: [Ubuntu] Installing OOo on Debian and Co.
There is no point making OOo non free since there is already Oracle Office and they should release a cloud version (non free).On the opposite, if they want to improve their product through users feedback, quality checks and so on, I guess that they need the widest users install base possible.
