    Japanese style font

how would I go about making my font work like a syllabary?
In Japanese setting, if I type "ka" it makes the symbol for "ka"
How would I do that to a made up font?

    summary:
how do I make a font that makes one character for every syllable instead of every input?

    What arrests my attention...

it's not actually Japanese that I'm trying to type in. I want to create a font that works like Japanese.
It's for a conlang. I need to have it so every syllable pops out like in katakana or hiragana.
