    That's sounds like a mis-configured or maybe even compromised system.
    Have you tried to set any proxy settings for yourself?

    Try this and see if you get any results:
    Code:
    set | grep -i prox
    Mine (10.04 LTS) looks like this:
    Code:
    			-find -s -nice -nouserlib -noclasspath -autoproxy \
    			url proxy fetch push mirror skipDefaultUpdate
    		core.gitProxy
    		http.proxy
                    COMPREPLY=($( compgen -W "$opts --percent --force                 --test --replacepkgs --replacefiles --root                 --excludedocs --includedocs --noscripts --ignorearch                 --dbpath --prefix --ignoreos --nodeps --allfiles                 --ftpproxy --ftpport --justdb --httpproxy --httpport                 --noorder --relocate --badreloc --notriggers                 --excludepath --ignoresize --oldpackage                 --queryformat --repackage --nosuggests" -- "$cur" ));
                                COMPREPLY=($( compgen -W "$opts --ftpport --ftpproxy                         --httpport --httpproxy" -- "$cur" ));
    		PreferredAuthentications Protocol ProxyCommand \
    The "smoking gun" we're looking for would be a line that looks
    something like "PROXY=" or "HTTP_PROXY="

    Did you set or were you aware of that localhost:4001 proxy?

    A few legitimate tools such as persistent web caches and
    privacy "onion" routers are specialized proxy servers.

    If you didn't set up any of the above I would change the thread title to
    something about a security breach or compromised system investigation.

    If you did install some type of privacy tool, the googled fix for this issue is:
    Code:
    sudo apt-get purge anon-proxy
    Sources:
    http://www.linuxquestions.org/questi...number-770509/
    http://forums.debian.net/viewtopic.php?t=310&

    Yes, that URL. Just kind of curious as to where you obtained it.
