As a heads up: using the fglrx drivers on 12.10 as of this time will disable the unity shell, leaving a blank desktop as the only gui.

installing the 12.11 catalyst beta driver worked for me:

I recently bought one of these used and installed the ubuntu gnome remix 12.10. I had used one for travel on loan from work and was really happy with it. I then installed the beta AMD graphics drivers as described in the previous post. When I got home, I tried to plug it into my external monitor (1920 x 1080) and was given an error stating that the max supported resolution is 1920 x 1920. So, I have to choose between the laptop monitor or my external. Is that the best it can do? I thought these could easily handle dual monitors or at least drive the laptop and an external simultaneously. Would the generic ubuntu driver do better? I seem to recall the loaner driving both displays with 11.10 installed and a generic graphics driver in the unity desktop.
I'm very poor at diagnosing graphics problems, but if anyone could lead the way, I would appreciate it, or suggest what diagnostics to post.
Thanks
