Angry Newbie with very basic question

I am so glad there are "no stupid questions".
I am totally lost. I am a basic computer user, very basic.
All I want to do is find the pictures I saved to my computer. If I click on pictures, I get a movie player, if I click on documents, same thing.
I usually can figure these things out, but not this time.
My computer guy installed new stuff and threw out the Windows, which is good, but he is out of town, and I am lost.
I have Shotwell photo manager if that helps, and the photos are not in there.

Yes, they should be in the "home" folder. One thing worries me though. You say your "computer guy" got rid of windows and installed some new stuff (I'm assuming "new stuff" means Ubuntu). Did he back up your data before he got rid of Windows? If not, your pictures are gone.

That is not a good thing. Anyway, you can change the program that you open a file with by going to Places->Pictures->Files->Open with other Application and then choosing which application that you desire to open the file with (in this case what ever application that you use to manage your photos.) However, I too would have to ask if you or someone backed up your pictures because they may be gone. Runeh76 has made a valid point.
