help: set up home file server/ most commin mistakes

(I hope this is the right place to post for server question.) Ok here's what's going on. My family is trying to start a new home sever (file only at this point) and were complete noobs on this. We (as in my brother and I) tried to find a guide or a tutorial on setting up one with the new 10.10 ver. but we could find anything. So my questions are: is there a tutorial on setting up a home server with Ubuntu 10.10 server. if so, were? If not, can somebody help us out here!? Also, I would like to know the common mistakes when setting up an Ubuntu sever.

your searches may be coming up short for a number of reasons. as a general rule for a linux file server: samba if there are windows computers, NFS if there aren't.

you should be able to find loads of guides on the ubuntu wiki and beyond.

i dont know about any common pitfalls, but just make sure you make good use of the server's log files if things dont go as expected and make sure rudimentary things work (such as pinging your server from the desktop etc)
