Install printer driver

i have a canon Pixma mx870 printer, i am trying to install drivers i downloaded.

i have connected the printer to the wireless router (confirmed connected to router by logging into router)

i have run the install.sh for the drivers and get to a point where it says "connect the printer to the network, when printer is ready, press the Enter key." i enter and then select network printer (other option is to select usb but i'm connected wirelessly)

install.sh ends with "could not detect the target printer"

I have tried to connect (add) the printer with the system>admin>printing util but can't seem to do that (need printer uri? or something else i don't know?

in any case any help would be appreciated.

still can't get the printer on the wireless network so have just attached it to the usb and it works fine, just wish i could get it working on the wireless network so i could print from my spiffy new zareason laptop
