Ubuntu is running in low-graphics mode

Hi, im trying to fix my friends laptop and after the most recent upgrade she performed she got this error message when her laptop boots. thing is that it stays frozen in that mode. i don't even see the grub boot loader. I know its the only operating system she has running on her laptop as well. any suggestions will be greatly appreciated.

the following error was encountered. you may need to update your configuration to solve this.

forgot to mention she is running ubuntu 10.10

I'm using a usb drive to see whats inside. wOot.!!! this is what the log reads.

alright this is what i got from etc/X11/xorg.conf

I wish i knew what was wrong with it and had time to investigate what caused the problem. But i fixed it. with a livecd, i crossed my fingers and hopped for the best. i mounted the partition, and ran the following

1. sudo mount /dev/sda1 /mnt
2. sudo chroot /mnt
3. apt-get update
4. apt-get upgrade

it asked for a command i forgot but it got it up and running with a new kernel 2.6.32-28.55 now its working like a charm. All i know now is that she is going to be a happy camper knowing she can finish her school work on time =). thanks for the help papibe =)

oh and i made a mistake, she is actually running 10.04.1 LTS
