    Re: Can't boot XP

You appear to have 2 of Windows Vista/7 boot files in with your XP boot files. They may be causing a problem.
I would try running fixmbr from the command prompt in the Windows repair cd and see if it then boots either when the first hard drive is selected as first boot device, or after sudo update-grub has been run from an Ubuntu installation.

    Re: Can't boot XP

I ran fixmbr and selected the first drive as boot drive, and XP booted fine. Then I did update-grub on the Ubuntu systems, but when selecting one as first boot drive I again couldn't get into XP.

I also had to reinstall GRUB on the third drive, as the MBR was overwritten by Windows.

    Code:

    Re: Can't boot XP

By the way, is it normal that the entry for XP says (hd0,1) while the GRUB command line tells me that (hd1,1) is NTFS?

    Re: Can't boot XP

[QUOTE=tombaugh;10370902]I ran fixmbr and selected the first drive as boot drive, and XP booted fine. Then I did update-grub on the Ubuntu systems, but when selecting one as first boot drive I again couldn't get into XP.

I also had to reinstall GRUB on the third drive, as the MBR was overwritten by Windows.

When you run fixmbr you must set the windows disk (sda) as first in the hard disk boot order in BIOS. This is because windows automatically writes it's bootloader to the first hard disk to boot. After you run fixmbr reboot and verify windows boots correctly, then reboot and go into BIOS and set the other disk as first to boot.

    Re: Can't boot XP

Sorry for that, I changed the boot order, did fixmbr again, but nothing has changed...

    Re: Can't boot XP

Please re-run the boot script and post the new output, thanks.
We can then see if the Win 7 boot files are now gone.

    Re: Can't boot XP

Please consider this just thinking out-loud

Looking at your drives reminded of something I confronted once:

    Code:
    Disk /dev/sda: 122.9 GB, 122942324736 bytes
    Disk /dev/sdb: 500.1 GB, 500107862016 bytes
    Disk /dev/sdc: 500.1 GB, 500107862016 bytes
I wonder if sda (the 120GB drive) is IDE and both sdb and sdc are SATA?

What I ran into was having two SATA hard drives with another IDE hard drive sharing an IDE cable where the hard drive was master and a CD/DVD drive was Slave.

In that case there were two IDE ports so I busted out two new "single device" 80 wire IDE cables, changed the CD/DVD to operate as Master, double checked that the IDE hard drive was set as Master, made sure that the cable for the hard drive was in the "primary" IDE port and CD/DVD was secondary.

After I was done it all worked as it should. I was almost shocked.

NOTE: Always follow "static-safe" procedures when messing with hardware!
