I wonder what happens if it does find /boot but finds stuff it cannot make sense of? I had a quick look at Grub source code (not for the faint of heart) and I did see a couple of instances of error conditions being terminated by infinite loops! I am not criticizing just noting that unconventional things can happen. Is it feasible that Grub would bomb and cause a fallback to the bios? Who knows.

Or you can echo check > /sys/block/md0/md/sync_action while the array is active.
Echoing repair instead of check will make it correct any inconsistencies.
Much more efficient than my suggestion. I was wondering where you found out about this and then I found an oblique reference here https://raid.wiki.kernel.org/index.php/Reconstruction.

I note that a RAID 1 repair will just ensure all the copies the same by, if necessary, copying the "first" of the chunk copies to the other locations. So this is fine if the first is the correct one.

Enabling the write intent bitmap makes resyncs MUCH faster.
    Thanks, I'll look into it.

If it finds the array and tries to load modules from it, but the array is corrupt, then all bets are off. It very well could crash in such a way that it just reboots.

Since it usually just reads the first copy then that would explain why it only works with the first disk present. When it falls back to the second copy, it's corrupt and so it crashes.

    Hello guys.

I've been out on the weekend, now I see YesWeCan solved his problem, which was different from mine.

I was thinking about one thing. We concluded that the system is booting from any disk when the first one is present. We thought about that because system booted when I changed the boot order in Bios. But it seems this is not correct. Changing the bios, we do not force the system to boot from an especific HD, we just change the order it tries to boot. It seems to me system is always booting from first HD. When I change the boot order, system just looks for booting information on other disk's MBR, founds nothing and keep trying in the order set untill it finds first disk again.

So, if this is correct, the conclusion is that only first HD have a readable MBR. When it is not present, bios tries the other disks, and since it founds none bootable, it resets. This explains the lack of beep, which denotes grub isn't even starting. I'll post the MBR's of all disks.

In a fresh install, the last step of installation is the system asking to install grub in the MBR. I chose yes, and it showed on screen that grub was being installed on all 4 disks.

Later, I tried reinstalling on all disks again with:

    grub-install /dev/sda
    grub-install /dev/sdb
    grub-install /dev/sdc
    grub-install /dev/sdd

That was running from the hard disks, not a livecd right?

Hi. The MBRs are not exactly the same (Grub may leave some bytes unchanged like most of the first few lines) but they appear to have the correct start addresses for the next stage, which I think is the 4 bytes at 005C.

I suspect your RAID 1 array is messed up. Try checking it like psusi suggested.

    Another idea.
Would you mind posting the output of 'sudo fdisk -l'
(wrap it code tags so it is easier to view: highlight text and click # above)

I'm not at home now, as soon as I get there I'll post the 'sudo fdisk -l'.

But it's strange to have a messed up RAID1. The problem happened after a fresh install, the same way it happens now (after a manual reinstall of grub in all disks), and the same way it happened after I tried a /boot on normal partitions (not RAID volumes).

YesWeCan, have you read what I said about the boot sequence in bios, that it doesn't prove that system could boot from other disks? Do you agree with that?

    Thanks for you help.
