I'm a 10.04 user and there is an annoying problem when I open the terminal and try to see a big ASCII file format (*.dat, for example).

When I type

cat myfile.dat

When I do that with a big file or a file with so many columns, the outuput on the screen does not flow swiftly. It is slow and seems to delay a little bit.

If I use the command

cat myfile.dat | less

and press the down key to scroll down and see the data, the same situation happens and even though I'm pressing the down key, the terminal only scrolls down a few lines.

That did not happen on Ubuntu 8.04, regardless the file size.

Is there something that I could do to solve that?

Thank You!
