    Firefox leads in Europe

For the first time in a decade, Microsoft’s Internet Explorer is no longer the leading Web browser in Europe, ceding the top position to Mozilla’s Firefox, an Irish research firm that tracks Web-surfing activity said Tuesday.

It seems like a milestone for an open source product to beat a microsoft product (in a market share sense) in a major consumer market.

Apache was there yonks ago. But well done Firefox!

Microsoft still are the yardstick everyone compares themselves against, but I wonder how long that's going to be true for. I kind of feel they're the new IBM. Once an unstoppable juggernaut that ruled the world but became set in stone and lost the ability to innovate, but that will never really die or go away.

I hate to bring bad news to a Firefox thread, but the big winner of 2010 was Chrome. It ended 2010 with 10% market share.

Firefox beating IE in Europe is definitely a great achievement. However, that is mostly due to Chrome eating a piece of IE market share.

Hopefully, Firefox 4 will help putting things back on track.

It's hard to say exactly. When you look at the overall figures, that's what it suggests. But there's also likely to be significant numbers of Firefox users switching to Chrome, many of who will be replaced by people switching to Firefox from IE.

For the record, I don't like Chrome browser and although I wish to have a browser based Firefox OS or Opera OS, I don't like the idea of being locked with a single application, a limited bash shell and the obligation to save my stuff in the cloud.
