How do I set 1280x800 resolution

It is seems to be a old problem, I still cannot get it. I cannot set my old machine with 910gml chipset to 1280x800 resolution in ubuntu10.10. I have tried 915resolution and editing xorg.conf ,but doesn't work. Can anybody help me with it. Thanks in advance.

Use xrandr in a terminal to check available resolutions & add new mode as per instructions in this post
