Re: nVidia Optimus and Ubuntu explained

I've encountered this issue on a Dell Vostro 360 all in one. I've tried installing the latest driver from Nvidia. I've tried Ironhide (although I may have done it incorrectly) and as of this post I am unable to install bumblebee from the PPA (were they removed?).

I was denied permission (even though I accepted the key) to the acpi_call script, and am now currently at at loss.

Is there anyone who has established a solution to this?

    I'm running Ubuntu 11.10.

This may be of use to people having trouble with Optimus/Nvidia.

I've tried ironhide twice on a fresh install without any success. I'm not sure if I'm not doing it correctly or if it's just not working, and I'm not willing to rule out either of the cases at the moment. It does tell me that there is no graphics profile for my machine, so if I get it working, I should submit it. If I could get it working, I'd love to submit it, but so far, no dice.

I have a Dell Inspiron N5110 (with Optimus) and had an issue with battery life and lack of 3D acceleration. I solved both problems by disabling the Nvidia, adding script to startup, removing Nvidia controllers and activating 3D in the Intel card. More in detail:

Using acpi_call directly is now deprecated, especially if you are using the _OFF methods. Use bbswitch instead which is used by Bumblebee 3.0 http://askubuntu.com/q/36930/6969

Um, has the Bumblebee/Ironhide bunch started a new thread?
I support SOPA and I dare say it.

    Hi there,
Lekensteyn above is correct. New bumblebee version 3.0 is working out of box. Thanks to https://wiki.ubuntu.com/Bumblebee

For my ASUS K53SV netbook, (NVIDIA GT540M) it is a great power saving too. With default Ubuntu 11.10 installation, my power consumption was nearly 30 W. I managed to cut it down to 22 W with some kernel options before boot using this (http://www.phoronix.com/scan.php?pag...15_power&num=1)

But Still the battery was lasting only for 2hr and 50 minutes at 20% screen brightness.

I installed today BUmblebee 3.0, (had never tried it in past, nor did for Ironhide). After installation and reboot it came to 12W consumption. Battery is now reading 4 hr and 40 minutes, and mind that the display brightness is at 50%.
I have tested some of the games on wine, which are working fine with bumblebee "optirum wine yourgame" command.

ONLY Bumblebee has managed to calm down my discrete NVIDIA card, which was by default always ON in my default Ubuntu 11.10 installation, and was consuming alone 10 W of power, cutting my battery down by 2 hours.

    Enjoy the solution.

Re: nVidia Optimus and Ubuntu explained

I now have one query, probably someone can tell me.

My NVIDIA card logo on my ASUS K53SV netbook reads CUDA(TM) on it.

Is it safe to follow the instructions suggested at http://samiux.blogspot.in/2011/05/ho...on-ubuntu.html ?

Mind that I already have installed Bumblebee 3.0 as suggested at https://wiki.ubuntu.com/Bumblebee

I fear the nvidia-current installation suggested on above CUDA page could break my already installation of Bumblebee 3.0 package.

I use parallel computing on desktops for FE simulations, so just curious about the CUDA technology.
