Question How to change Startup Sound

    I hope y'all can help.

I wanted to change my startup sound from the default to a really cool sound I like from SUSE 9.1 KDE - http://www.perfectreign.com/stuff/KDE_91_Startup.wav - which I've used on every version of openSUSE until I swiched over to Ubuntu this year.

Now, I click on Start > System > Control Center >Sounds > Sound Preferences

As you can see in the enclosed screenshot, I've switched the sound over to the KDE_91_Startup file.

However, once I click apply, the sound - when I click on the icon next to the file name - is teh default human Ubuntu sound.

    What gives?

I searched and only found this thread: http://ubuntuforums.org/showthread.php?t=566824

Click on the checkbox "Play sound effetcs when buttons are clicked" at the top of the sound preferences box. Hope that solves your problem. Thanks for the .wav.I set it as my Login sound.

Re: How to change Startup Sound

I'm using Kubuntu 9.04 and I cannot find the Control Center let alone the events dialog shown at the top of this thread.

I have settings, where I can change the default sounds device, volume controls and everything seems to be working I just cannot change from the horrible default start-up / shut down sound events.

Is there a handy command line that I can type in to get the settings that I need? Is there a file to be edited?
Hmmm... I think I may know this one Herbert.

Re: How to change Startup Sound

To have a new startup sound in Ubuntu Gnome you have to put a new sound .wav or .ogg in usr/share/sounds* and then go to Preferences => Startup applications and see here: http://www.wubijacq.com/freedesktop/
