    Re: Wubi megathread

    I did a check disk.
I still can't find the found.000 file in C or D, either through cmd and terminal.
Last time i was running ubuntu, I remember that the ubuntu power icon was red in colour (usually means it needs restarting for changes to be loaded)
    ...could it be that?

    ...i'm going to re-install,
thanks for trying and the quick responses!

    Re: Wubi megathread

    davidisinterested,

Sorry it didn't work out. It's a bit of a mystery to me what causes these disappearing root.disks. I don't think it happens a lot, and generally assume it's due to hard poweroffs although obviously not in your case. So... no idea really.

A direct install won't suffer from this - so that's worth a thought. I also keep data synched on Ubuntu One or on the host partition so there's less risk in using Wubi, which is something you could do to mitigate the risk if you stick with wubi.

    Error : Target filesystem doesn't have /sbin/init

I'm running dual boot Ubuntu 10.04/WinXP. From last week I can't boot Ubuntu successfully. Win XP works fine. I'm using Live USB right now.
    Error details -

mount: mounting /dev on /root.dev failed no such file or directory
mounting /sys on /root/sys failed no such file or directory
mounting /proc on /root/proc failed no such file or directory
    Target filesystem doesn't have /sbin/init
    ......
No init found. Try passing init=bootarg

    I tried the command e2fsck -f -y -v /dev/sdb1 as discussed on http://ubuntuforums.org/showthread.php?t=1167710&page=2
    output :
e2fsck: Superblock invalid, trying backup blocks...
e2fsck: Bad magic number in super-block while trying to open /dev/sdb1

The superblock could not be read or does not describe a correct ext2
filesystem. If the device is valid and it really contains an ext2
filesystem (and not swap or ufs or something else), then the superblock
is corrupt, and you might try running e2fsck with an alternate superblock:
    e2fsck -b 8193 <device>

Please see the attached boot info script results and suggest solution. Thanks in advance.

    To fsck:
    Code:
    sudo mkdir /media/win
    sudo mount /dev/sda1 /media/win
    sudo fsck /media/win/ubuntu/disks/root.disk
To mount and browse virtual disk with nautilus:
    Code:
    sudo mount -o loop /media/win/ubuntu/disks/root.disk /mnt
    gksu nautilus /mnt
You can then copy data to /media/win

EDIT: you can mount before fsck'ing to copy data, but don't fsck while mounted. You can use those flags as well if you like (fyv : force even if clean/respond yes to prompts/verbose)

    PS bootinfoscript:
    Code:
Boot Info Script 0.60 from 17 May 2011

Another thing you can check... after you've run fsck and if you still have problems, mount the root.disk and check how much space is available:
    Code:
    df -h
It will show space available on /dev/loop# (probably /dev/loop1 as /dev/loop0 is your live USB file system). That's another possible cause of booting problems. Post the results here if you still have problems.

Edit: Tried the first 2 of the 3 things from that link, resulting in a blank black screen where the purple one was before. (No big deal, for some reason changing the Plymouth theme to anything but the original Ubuntu Logo purple one results in a black screen. Switching bck brings back the purple one.)

The modification of the login screen works, but I have my comp set to log in automatically.

The 3rd of the 3 I didn't have the guts to try, because I have rendered my system unbootable several times in the past by messing with 05_Debian_Theme.

It is mentioned in the Plymouth thread that Wubi installs are missing a couple of modules, and that this is likely the reason that Plymouth themes don't work. Is it possible that all we have to do is replace these modules and we will have a good way to change the boot screen?
I changed my Wubi install to the solar theme. It didn't show up at first, but I remembered some fix from when 10.04 was released. Now it shows up with a little black gap between the theme and the (still) purple login background. The login background has to be changed separately which is a bit of a pain.
On shutdown I'm getting some console messages so the solar theme is a little messed (might be because i'm on a dev release)

I'm not recommending these instructions, but this is what I did.
    Code:
    sudo apt-get install plymouth-theme-solar
    sudo update-alternatives --config default.plymouth
    #select solar
    echo "FRAMEBUFFER=y" | sudo tee -a /etc/initramfs-tools/conf.d/splash
    sudo update-initramfs -u
    Explanation of code
    1. install solar theme
    2. select solar theme as default
    3. old patch that gets theme to show (works on my computer with intel graphics, no idea whether this is still the way to do this).
    4. update initial ram disk

I'll investigate the login background separately.

    Hi,
do you have a specific support question?

If you are not using Wubi, please post in the relevant sub-forum such as General Help, Installation & Upgrades etc.

    Thanks.

    Getwrecked9,

    Welcome to the Ubuntu forums.

It's the next release of Ubuntu, currently in testing. It should be released in October.

The question doesn't have anything to do with this thread however, so if you have unrelated questions please begin a new thread in the appropriate forum. There is a "New thread" button at the top left of each forum.

The oneiric forum shouldn't be closed. Older 'development' threads (for previous releases while they were undergoing testing) are closed to new posts, but oneiric should not be. If you have problems posting, we have a "Forum Feedback & Help" forum where you can ask questions and seek assistance for matters relating to the forums themselves.

    Re: Wubi megathread

Every time I try to install Ubuntu with Wubi, Wubi fails at the download. It seems like the servers are down. I have to install it using Wubi because I'm on a netbook with no CD/DVD drive and doesn't support USB Boot. Attached is the error log, it seems as if the servers are down or something.
