Many thanks for your advice.

I attempted to follow your instruction only to end up a creek without a paddle. No matter what I tried I could not find what you asked.

Gave up on that, removed Ubuntu from Windows7 by using add/remove programmes.

Went back to Ubuntu.com and tried again.

At the end of the sequence the following was displayed :

Had another look in the C drive but was totally unable to follow the file path. Unable to find appdata and after that things go to pot.

I'm not sure why wubi would have problems locating or updating the BCD - when you didn't get this error the first time you ran it. That is puzzling.

You can locate the log file in the %temp% directory. If you try to browse for it, you'll get stuck as it's defaulted to be a hidden directory. But it seems pretty clear that it cannot update the BCD for some reason.

Please accept that I am thick and having difficulty in following your explanation. Can you please advise where I should be looking and how I access a hidden directory.

Can I assume that I should be looking in Windows?

Another thing that puzzles me is that as I currently dual boot Windows 7 & Lucid and can switch with ease between them why Wubi can't find the bootloader. Could this be a problem originating from Ubuntu.com?

Your further assistance will be most appreciated.

Open up Windows explorer, click on the address bar and enter %temp%
That takes you to your temp folder. The log file for 11.04 is called wubi-11.04-rev211.log

You can do this without getting hidden files/folders to show. But if you want to show hidden folders/files on Win7, open Windows explorer, hit ALT+t to get to the Tools menu, select Folder options, select View tab, and check "Show hidden files, folders and drives"

Windows like to keep things secret. Having followed your advice I found a wubi-11.04-res211 but not ending .log. On further looking it appears to be what you are looking for.

I had a look at the wubi file earlier but as it did not show as .log I deleted it and started everything fresh once again only to be confronted with the error message that I posted earlier.

I can't get any further forward than that point so I hope that the details provided can throw some light on the subject and that I can get wubi to work as expected.

I'm not really familiar with the ins and outs of the BCD store. I only recently upgraded my XP pc to Windows 7. However, here is a good article about it: http://www.multibooters.co.uk/bootmgr.html

Basically, I believe the solution would be to use bcdedit to identify the BCD store. Currently it appears that this is not set, and this is causing the bcdedit command to fail.

I am happy with Wubi, but I have only 5 Gb free in my 30Gb Wubi Ubuntu disk, as my Ubuntu One account grows and grows ... (if only Wubi could manage more than 30 Gb!)
Any suggestion regarding the chance of getting Ubuntu installed in my computer?

Sorry... I feel it should be something simple. But I too an unfamiliar with this - and since my other computer died recently I don't have a backup and am loathe to experiment too much with my current one (which pays the bills).

One technique I have used is to just install to an external hard drive. I have one with about 6 separate Ubuntu installations. If you're just trying it out, that is a reasonably cheap method provided you take care to install grub2 to the External, and not the internal which is seems to do by default.
Also you can run 11.04 from a live USB - it's much slower than Wubi to boot, but performs reasonably just to have a look - and much faster than a live CD (plus allows some persistence).

If I find some update on how to fix bcdedit I'll let you know.

If you have wubi running, then installing Ubuntu direct should work too. Your problems booting a live CD most likely have to do with the CD - make sure you burn it at the slowest speed and check the md5sum. See step 2 here for instructions.

Actually, the problem is that Ubuntu live does not see my RAID structure, as I showed in my lshw file. I need to manage the RAID disks with the Ubuntu installer, and I cannot.
