Use signed (or stable which is always the latest). The difference between the two is that it's signed by a certificate registered to Canonical (verifies the source of the exe).

But both are the same otherwise.

Could you get viruses in Wubi? I don't mean viruses in Linux, but in Windows, when using Linux. And I'm talking specifically drive-by viruses

In theory, yes. In practice, it seems a low probability for virus makers to target Windows via a linux install, even lower with Wubi.

    Re: Wubi megathread

Hi. I've very new to this and I'm having a little trouble getting started. I have downloaded Wubi via the Snapfiles website. I began the install which ran to the point where it asked for the computer to be rebooted. I rebooted and it opened in windows as normal. I've rebooted a couple more times and the reinstalled Wubi. But the computer always starts in Windows. I was expecting to have a choice when I restarted. I'd be really grateful if someone could point me in the right direction?

I'm using a ten year old HP pc, with an AMD 1.53Ghz processor and IGB of RAM. And I'm running XP.

You should get wubi from here: http://www.ubuntu.com/download/ubuntu/windows-installer

Assuming that the version on snapfiles is equivalent (I have no idea), then you should check whether the OS timeout is set correctly:
    Right click on My computer
    Click on Properties
    Click on the Advanced tab
Click on Startup & Recovery settings
Make sure the "Time to display operating systems" is set to 10.

    Re: Wubi megathread

I recently ran the Wubi installer from within Windows 7. The installer failed part-way through, and now when I reboot I am forced to choose Windows or Ubuntu. Ubuntu fails (as I expected, and am okay with since I will use a virtual machine for Ubuntu), however I can no longer boot into Windows. It seems that it is pointing to the HP Windows Recovery partition.
I attempted using Windows disks to do the automated repair, with no luck. I also tried the recboot.exe commands.

The output of my boot_info_script is:

I am thinking that the boot loader should point to /dev/sda2. I haven't been able to find out how to modify the boot loader that is there now to do that.

    Please help.

Your main windows partition is damaged: no file system is detected.

This doesn't seem likely to have resulted from a Wubi install... also you have syslinux as your bootloader which is unusual. Was Windows booting after the failed wubi install, and then it broke further following attempted repairs, or was it immediately failing following reboot?

i.e. what was the reason for running repairs - just to get rid of the 'ubuntu' option in the windows boot manager, or to get windows booting? It would help to understand what repair steps were performed, to figure out how to fix it.

    Thank you for your help.

It was broken after the first reboot. Windows wouldn't launch, so I started trying repairs.
First I tried Linux boot repair live cd.
Then I tried the system repair, as the windows in the Boot menu took me to a recovery mode (assuming in built in recovery partition).
Then I tried system repair options on windows 7, Vista, an xp discs.
    I then tried commands :
    sudo lilo -M /dev/sda mbr
also in windows recovery cmd prompt:
    bootrec.exe /fixboot
    bootrec.exe /fixmbr

Whoa! That worked. Is it annoying being so good? So simple and sensible yet so impossible for me to find out without asking! It's downloading now. I'm guessing I'll have other questions. But for now, thank you very much.

One more question. I saw a blog of yours about upgrades. I am being offered an upgrade to 11.10 which I thought I was downloading. Should I go ahead and upgrade or should I follow your blog advice? Or is there another way?

Okay... first off you should file a bug. As I said, I don't believe it's Wubi that broke Windows (or more precisely, I haven't seen any other cases where this has happened; and the mechanics of Wubi don't interfere with any critical parts of Windows booting) - but nothing is impossible, so file the bug.

Running boot repair probably put syslinux in the MBR - I don't know much about boot repair so can't comment on what it does. Probably best to ask the person who wrote it (there is a support email address on this page).

If you ran the windows system restore I'm not sure what it did either - clearly it didn't work though.

    What would I do?
    1. If you have data on /dev/sda2 that's not backed up I'd try to recover it. A tool like photorec (that comes with testdisk) can do this - although it's not going to be pretty (recovered files don't have meaningful names, and deleted files are recovered as well as normal files and you have to sort through them all afterwards).

You can install testdisk from a live CD (sudo apt-get install testdisk) and that includes photorec as well.

    2. You can use a partitioning tool like testdisk to see if it can recover your /dev/sda2 partition. I don't know how successful this will be, but it's worth a try.

    3. ...?
