    Hi,

As far as I'm aware there is no reliable way of installing itunes on Ubuntu. I've tried myself using Wine and Crossover Linux and whilst the install went without a hitch the program itself was unusable, i.e. it would freeze as soon as it started.

I still maintain the point that designing a monolithic kernel in 1991 is a fundamental error. Be thankful you are not my student. You would not get a high grade for such a design (Andrew Tanenbaum to Linus Torvalds)

    You're welcome.

There are plenty of alternatives to itunes available for Ubuntu, e.g. Rhythmbox, Banshee, Amarok. The Ubuntu One Music Store in Rhythmbox is also a great place to download music or perhaps you could use Amazon. (Both these sources are DRM-free as well.

It might be worth giving v10 a go with Wine...

    Apparently the store works too...

Songbird is the most look-a-like iTunes app for linux I can think of.
It has all the things iTunes gives you. It doesn't have the apple store but you can install ubuntu-one as an add-on. Since songbird comes with a built in web browser you can install the addons directly from songbird.

Do NOT try this if you are using iTunes for your ipod or iphone.

Here's a tip. If you want something to work perfectly, fine and smoothly, don't depend on wine (unless you can't find any linux alternative).

Re: How can I install Itunes on Ubuntu 10.10 Desktop Maverick?

I'm running Maverick 10.10 on a Dell Inspiron 1501 Laptop. I installed Virtualbox (PUEL version - That's important for USB support) and installed a virtual PC with Windows XP. I then installed Itunes latest version in the Windows virtual machine and found that (as long as I tell the Device Manager to look at the iPhone) it works beautifully.

    Voila!

    Regards.

Was it resolved using the virtualbox method?

I am fed up with my windows machine constantly messing me about so i'm thinking of going just straight ubuntu finally and use it as my main OS, the one thing for me is the iphone support.

I will be needing to sync apps, ringtones and ebooks across, is this supported as well as music? Will it be just as if using itunes in windows without any limitations? I can't see why not but just want to make sure before I make the leap! Never used VM's before but aware of the concept
