Cheese Software Video Format (unusable!)

Hello, again!

After extensive googling (and reading through multiple threads in this very forum on this very topic) I am still unable to solve this simple problem:

Cheese records in a format unusable by youtube. I have tried using PiTiVi to "render" my videos into a usuable format, but once I hit "render" ... nothing happens. It says it is rendering, but the progress bar stays safely at zero.

I have in the past tried WXcam, but was unable to fix some frame rate problems (also for a while it wouldn't record sound. I have since uninstalled the program).

I have read that cheese has a glitch preventing one from changing video formats. Is this true?

okay so I just reinstalled wxcam and got it working but the sound quality is low. Is there a way to reduce crackling?
