what to do with a failed hard drive???

So, my wife's laptop was poorly designed and I think the summer heat might have caused the hard drive to fail early, thankfully now i know she needs external fans.

I tried looking around but I see no way of fixing the drive so now I am left with a failed hard drive..............

so my question is, does any one have any ideas ideas or suggestions as to what I should do with it?

I tried installing other os's just to check them out but the hard drive is so bad that no os will install, and the current os, vista, works for like 1 min before crashing.

I was thinking maybe doing something like this.....

Check to see if it's still under warranty, and if it is return it for a replacement. Many hard drives have multi-year warranties. I had a 2 year old WD 750Gb go defective a couple of weeks ago, I got an rma from the factory and sent it in for a replacement.

cariboo..good idea, but mine is a western digital and their page says:

If your Product was purchased as a component integrated within a system by a system manufacturer, no limited warranty is provided by WD. Please contact the place of purchase or the system manufacturer directly for warranty service.

+1 on the magnets. Those things are crazy strong.

Plus, it's cool to take a drive apart & see how it works.
