Im hoping someone more knowledgable about alsa will come and post the proper solution, but.. its weird. You do have 2 soundcards in that system (onboard and a soundblaster audigy) and neither is initialized. Even weirder that installing flash could cause that
Anyway. Try purging alsa (thats like removing, but it also removes all configuration files):
Be careful, iirc ubuntu will also remove ubuntu-desktop. If that happens, its okay, just reinstall it before you reboot.Code:sudo apt-get --purge remove linux-sound-base alsa-base alsa-utils
Then reinstall alsa (and ubuntu-desktop).
reboot, cross fingers.Code:sudo apt-get install linux-sound-base alsa-base alsa-utils ubuntu-desktop
Yes 2 sound cards an onboard and a pci.The pci is selected in BIOS.
When I first installed Maverick I had system sounds (login, button etc) and rhythmbox worked just no sound in Flash.I attempted the fixes that gave me sound in Lucid but the ALSA upgrade script didn't like me and killed all sound. It seem I can't reload the ca0106 driver but I am not sure.
I tried the commands you suggest but they don't achieve a positive result.

When you say uninstall ububntu desktop P4man do you mean the desktop volume control or the whole OS?

I have the same exact problem.
Ubuntu 11.04 on Dell Dimension E510 desktop
Ubuntu 11.04 on Dell 1420n laptop
Right so you dont mean the whole OS, just the desktop part of Home folder? So back it up before running those scripts?

ubuntu-desktop is a (meta)package. If you uninstall alsa, sometimes (always?) that package is automatically uninstalled as well. The commands I posted above take care of that, it will reinstall the package, note the install instructins include 'ubuntu-desktop'. I was merely explaining why that is there.
But all this is a moot point since it apparently doesnt help.
Perhaps one of you facing this problem can post the contents ofMaybe that sheds some light on what happenend. I can only guess installing flash caused something to be uninstalled that you need, but like I said, Im no expert.Code:/var/log/dpkg.log
