could not stat the resume device file or hybernate to death

    Hi
I have a small problem after closing the lid of my laptop while ubuntu 10.10 was still running (I thought thats possible) it does not boot anymore, but it says

resume: could not stat the resume device file '/dev/dm-0'

on every boot... (no matter normal or recovery)
    What can I do?

Oh and btw. if I get this fixed and I really hope so, how do I make a 100% image of my harddisk on a usb drive which I only have to clone back when I freak out my system again?

    Thx kindly for any help!

Think this is either a bug or something to do with your swap partition..not sure...could be none of the above (I'm still a bit new too)...can you post the output of

    Code:
    df
to do this, open a terminal - CTR+ALT+T
type the command, highlight copy and past here
    Perseverance will succeed (usually)

unfortunately I'm not able to do as you suggest, my comp a asus k50in boots, then he stops, when I now press alt f7 it says:

    resume: libcrypt version: 1.4.5
resume: could not stat the resume device file '/dev/dm-0'
Please type in the full path name to try again or press enter to boot the system

    If I try enter nothing
if I alt switch to another consol black screen
only working keys contr alt delete ... reboot...
I could boot it with a live system from cd ... or put the hdd into another comp ...

What's the size of your SWAP partition?

As for backup, you just need to backup your important data files. As for Ubuntu itself, the whole installation process is less than 15mins so it's pointless to backup Ubuntu itself if you ask me.

Your Live CD/USB is kind of your rescue media in case something will go wrong. Also, if you have an external HDD, that would be much better to keep your important files there.

Thx a lot for your replys!

Before I file a bug report I will try to tackle this. I booted from a live cd and started looking, most people in google describe the error related to a failure in initramfs, my laptop was set to hibernate when the lid is closed since this was the first time (and last ) obviously hibernate does not work, so the question is what does initramfs do and is it related to hibernate and can that be fixed somehow if it goes wrong. I will research. Which log would you consult for this?
The /var/log/pm-suspend.log says performing hibernate success no errors

My swap partition is 8 GB (double Ram I'm told) and
Forgive me a bit of rambling after a hard day with a not working ubuntu, because
I needed 15 min to install ubuntu
    5 min for skype
5 min to make my cd burner appear in the burning app
15 min to get the proprietary graphics and audio drivers installed and working in which by the way the new ubuntu does a awesome job assisting you
1h to install virtual box with a OS to be able to use the occasional Photoshop, because I wasn't able in another
1h to install Photoshop with wine
2h to turn the picture of the webcam which is mounted upside down in skype
not to speak about linking a disconnected wpa2 support to my wlan driver (I still don't understand it completely, it was a copy paste orgy) and
3h research and rebooting for the question why and how a boot parameter has to be given to the kernel so a restart would work.
That is, again you may forgive the slightly talkative part, but it could have been longer, mainly the reason, why I don't want to just backup my 3 openoffice documents after reenabling me to restart the thing

    Hi,

With an Ubuntu LiveCD/USB go to Applications > Administration > Disk Utility, find your HDD - click the Swap Partition and reformat it as Swap.

I tried diskutility and it writes /dev/sda3 swap -I formated-, also I tried mkswap /dev/sda3, which worked too. But next boot same error ;(
It happens after/during running /scripts/local-premount if that says anything!?

is that normal? why is sda3 commented out could that be the mistake?

    Code:
    # /etc/fstab: static file system information.
    #
    # Use 'blkid -o value -s UUID' to print the universally unique identifier
    # for a device; this may be used with UUID= as a more robust way to name
    # devices that works even if disks are added and removed. See fstab(5).
    #
    # <file system> <mount point> <type> <options> <dump> <pass>
    proc /proc proc nodev,noexec,nosuid 0 0
    # / was on /dev/sda1 during installation
    UUID=6c8f1d77-1ff6-40ab-a27f-2acc44c27428 /               ext4    errors=remount-ro 0       1
    # /data was on /dev/sda2 during installation
    UUID=55e046de-57ab-43d1-a9b3-ab3d1595f14c /data           ext3    defaults        0       2
    #/dev/sda3 none swap sw 0 0

Looks like something went wrong with partitioning. Back everything up and try reinstalling ubuntu?
