    Question Aspire 5820TG Graphics problem

    Hello,

    I don't know that much about this stuff so please bear with me.

    I recently installed Ubuntu 10.10 on my Acer Aspire 5820TG laptop. After updating everything needed to I go to System>Administration>Additional Drivers and find "ATI/AMD proprietary FGLRX graphics driver". I "activate" it but then when I restart my laptop I only get the console view, no screen at all. At this point I didn't know what to do so I reinstalled Ubuntu and haven't activated the driver after that.

    Now, this isn't a big problem until I try to play some games. They all have incredible lag and I'm guessing it's due to not having a graphics driver installed.

    I've searched through Google a bit, and wound up on several threads on this site, but couldn't find a solution and all I can think of is that either Ubuntu is showing me the wrong driver or that I have 2 graphics cards and the wrong one is used.

    If anyone can help I'd be eternally grateful because it would mean I won't have to go back to Windows.

    I've got a similar problem with the same laptop model. This model has an onboard Intel HD graphics adapter and a dedicated Radeon 5650HD graphics adapter. Acer provides a Windows application to switch between both without reboot.

    Ubuntu is working fine until I install the proprietary ATI driver. After restart the console shows up and when I type "startx" I get error messages like "no devices detected" and "no screens found". I can bypass the error by going into BIOS and disabling the Intel HD chip (you can't disable the Radeon). But since this action decreases the battery life (under Windows 7) from 6-7 hours to 2-3 hours I would like to have the same switch option under Ubuntu.

    Any ideas?

    After you install fglrx you have to go into bios and graphics --> discrete (normally set to switchable)

    it's annoying because everytime i switch over to win7 i have to switch it back to switchable in bios :@

    then back to discrete for ubuntu grrrr
