I wonder which OS NASA uses

I've been wondering which OS do NASA or any government agencies use?

On the NASA my bet would be on something of their own, perhaps Unixy.

Re: I wonder which OS NASA uses

I have a friend who works for NASA (in Mountain View, CA) with the Earth Science department and they use Solaris... However, he told me that some other departments are using RedHat Linux Enterprise.
In the world of Linux, who needs Windows and Gates...

I've worked with NASA's JPL lab in Pasedana, CA. In addition to Solaris and RHEL, they had a LOT of Mac laptops there.

They use Fedora and RHEL for many important tasks at Kennedy Space Center. Here's proof:

There was just a Digg posting on this... they use Fedora 8 (some are tinkering with the Fedora 9 alpha) as well as RHEL.

I'm sure they use others, as the article was the blog of a RHEL contributor who visited NASA.

I believe I see a Windows desktop in that one screenshot with the video feed.

A friend of mine does a lot of training at NASA for Microsoft. I can say with certainty that they use MS OS's.

I am sure they use a mix, and have their own software.

(They use ThinkPad's in space though, not sure what OS, as ThinkPads do come with Linux)

NASA has their own Linux-based OS that they had contracted. One of my professors is a former NASA employee (she wrote some of the FORTRAN and Assembly that got the men on the moon!), and she told us when we were talking about the ethical issues of releasing buggy code (that discussion included "a certain big company that is extremely popular even though their OS is very unstable").
