I'd like to get to the point of finding people for regular meetings, hackfests, etc.

Re: Proposed --> Chicago Ubuntu Team

I have created #ubuntu-chicago on irc.freenode.net where we can all meet online to brainstorm, use it as a catch all for ideas that could come together and help out the team and the marketing aspect of Ubuntu, use it as our answering service in a way. If you are unable to use IRC, or need help, feel free to message me. I am nixternal at every possible chat client there is If you are already on IRC, come join me!!!

This is a BYO computer deal right?

Many people have expressed a desire to meet so you may have some takers here for an organzied sub event...

    Just a thought
Average Age: Anywhere from 18-45 I would say a good average would be 27.
Average Attendance: 15 (We have room for 25.)
Games Played: Quake 4, UT2004, HL2Mods, F.E.A.R., BF2 (Mostly FPS), we also will give most any game a try as long as its fun.
    BYOC: Yes
    BYOB: Optional

If your in the area and like to game come check it out. If your in the area and don't like to game, come check it out anyways because its a good time, and a good place to talk shop. Although we try to get everyone involved in every game. We discourage MMORPG play at the LAN, as it defeats the purpose of playing with other around you. I run a FULL Gigabit Network so file transfers are fast and low ping is king. On my site http://www.minilanclub.com I say the party is from Noon-4am, but you can come and go as you please, and if people want to stay longer thats cool too. I hope this information has been helpful. Any other question feel free to ask away.

Nice, place, but I'll be distracted by the video games. How about the ESPN Zone, at least the arcade is upstairs.

Re: Proposed --> Chicago Ubuntu Team

HERE are a few images a couple of the Chicago guys have been messing around with in the #ubuntu-chicago IRC channel on freenode.net. There are quite a few people on freenode that are from the Chicago land area and could possibly be interested in having a Chicago Ubuntu LoCo. Come check out the IRC channel, as we are always in there camping out, waiting to do some work.

We can brainstorm very easily in the irc channel which is nice. Plus on IRC there are many Ubuntu channels in which to help provide support to those with issues, the new guys, or people switching from Windows or Mac over to Linux. Any and all help is greatly appreciated.

If you look around the wiki and take a look at the LoCoTeamList, you will notice there are a lot of well organized teams. Those teams took some time to create and get going, but they have been very successfull in the whole "Spreading Ubuntu" campaign. Chicago needs to help out, so this is the call.

Greenwom started this badboy, and from my understanding he is pretty busy right now taking care of his career change. Let's step up and start brainstorming and working together, so when he can participate 100% we can have a good base to present him.

Thanks everyone!!! And I will see you at the Taste next week!!!

Re: Proposed --> Chicago Ubuntu Team

    Hey Chicagoans!!!

Just wanted to let everyone know that I have been working with Ubuntu members in the community on making Ubuntu Chicago happen. Just so you all know, here are a couple of items on my agenda, which would be great if you all could help:

    1. Get the Ubuntu Chicago LoCo Team off the ground
    2. Been working to get a Mailing List setup for Ubuntu Chicago via the Ubuntu Mailer
    3. Once the members start showing up, get space on an Ubuntu sponsored server for a web site, wiki, and forums
    4. Get a greater community online via irc (irc.freenode.net #ubuntu-chicago) where we can meet, communicate, brainstorm, and become a greater community.
    5. Help support the Ubuntu Community via bug squashing, technical support, marketing, and spreading Ubuntu.
    6. Presenting the team to the Ubuntu Community Council, becoming a registered and Ubuntu acknowledged LoCo.

Right now I am trying to get all of this going. I have seen many of you express your support and interest in a Ubuntu Chicago Team, join the irc channel and lets start working together as one, making the team a hit.

Our plans are not to be another LUG in the Chicago land area. Our plan is to market Ubuntu throughout the Chicago land are. Each one of us will be a direct line of communication for the Ubuntu community. So please, come show your support and lets make Ubuntu Chicago a reality.

What Ubuntu Chicago Needs: For one, it needs each and everyone of you. We need a diverse community. Whether you use Ubuntu, Kubuntu, Xubuntu, Edubuntu, or any other Ubuntu distrobution, we need you. We need coders, networkers, tech savvy, non-tech savvy, marketers, entrepreneurs, men, women, and children. We need it all. Even if you just have an interest into Ubuntu, you are welcome.

Thank you everyone, as we look forward to seeing you online! Take care.

NOTE: Greenwom is currently tied up with scheduling and an opportunity of a life-time. Greenwom is still the founder/idealist with Ubuntu Chicago, however he will more then likely be afk for a little bit. He has expressed that he wants to be active, and just so you all know, he will always be active and always be the founder/idealist of the team. In the mean time, if you wish to communicate with the team, feel free to email me @ nixternal at gmail dot com. I will relay all messages as needed. Thanks again everyone.

A little Chicago Ubuntu (cubbies look) image. Transparent background, with a hint of a drop shadow. Gimp of course for the tool of choice. Make one better somebody!!! I am horrible with graphics.

also check out These Images as I have no life and decided to play with Gimp some more. I know one of you are graphically inclined, as I really am not. Thanks everyone.

Thanks to Mr_HeNtAi for showing up in IRC and chatting away. Seems him and I share a few common acquaintances within the gaming community. He has a lot of great ideas and connections that will be a huge asset to the Ubuntu Chicago team.

I really like the top graphic that is colored with the new C logo for Chicago, but it would look better with the rounded edges from the third graphic. Merge the two and see what you get...Good Work! You get a Gold !
