1. you can't easily find the MD5SUMs for the isos (I had to use google, freakin' hell!)
2. you can't manually select a better mirror
Nuff said.

1: is VERY true.
I also have to google to get the md5sums, been like that for years and years.
I can't really care about 2, my downloads are always fast, and always from the right mirrors.

That's hardly "awful"
Chances of an image corrupting on download is scarce & the mirror thing? Woop-de-doo, so you may not get the best of speeds, at least it downloads;
Ubuntu's made for the simplest of people, clearly, whining because it doesn't fit to your expectations is pathetic.
If they can download and manage to install it; fair do's to them.
I am sure those mirrors will be there later.
I know not with what weapons World War III will be fought, but World War IV will be fought with sticks and stones.

No, it is not awful .. you just haven't the energy to take 10 seconds to search!

And mirrors are not up and running on many sites until they get around to LOADING. Lots are at educational facilities and the IT has to "get around to it".
I think, the point of OP is: it's not intuitive, one can't find it as easily as it should be found.
Sure 2 clicks.
Rubiks Cube can be solved from any of the 43,252,003,274,489,856,000 possible configurations in 20 moves.
Does not make those 20 moves easy, does it.

Of the websites of all the major distros I think Ubuntu's is one of, if not, the best. It's easy to navigate and there is plenty of information whether you're a first-time visitor or someone trying to solve a more specific problem, i.e. finding alternative downloads.

What is 2 clicks away from the first page?
Answer: not a proper list of mirrors.
Yap, not the best of speeds. It auto-selected a mirror from which I downloaded with 200 something-300 KB/s.
A local mirror offers the iso @ 10MB/s.
Woot or no woot?
Now that bolded part is the most pathetic reasoning ever to justify the limitations.Ubuntu's made for the simplest of people, clearly, whining because it doesn't fit to your expectations is pathetic.

Figure why by yourself.
