It's the smallest IDE drive I have available but unfortunately, it poses some unique problems.

After the install is concluded and I reboot without the CD, I always get the grub rescue prompt with the error "out of disk". Trying to "rescue" with prefix, root and insmod linux results in another "out of disk" error right after insmod (and all the other commands in the list thereafter).

I've tried various other configurations but nothing seems to work. It seems that such a drive cannot be used as a boot drive in this setup. This is rather shameful, as Windows can use it - it's just Linux that cannot.
It's possible that with your configuration the system can't see any Grub configuration files past the 8GB limit (even though the OS, once booted, can). This is a very old limitation; later BIOS could see to 137GB, and the newest don't have that limitation.

The solution in each case is to place a boot partition within the limits the BIOS can see (for you perhaps 8GB). If you do a search on these forums for posts discussing the 137GB BIOS limitation you will find how to go about creating a boot partition in the correct location.

With a 137GB limitation, finding an area to create a boot partition isn't normally a problem. If you have to find space in the first 8GB of the drive it could be more of a problem. You might have to install and boot from a secondary drive or an external drive if you can't put the partition on your main drive.

    Re: Grub Rescue Prompt Megathread

    Hello,

I am getting this error and am running off a bootable USB. I had this problem before on a upgraded ubuntu version. I fixed it, but decided to install the latests Ubuntu from fresh, now it has happened again. I have not deleted the old install yet as I wanted to get all my settings setup on the new one first.

    Thanks for your help

    Re: Grub Rescue Prompt Megathread

    NOTE FOR WUBI INSTALLERS:
    - First, let me state that I downloaded the alternate wubildr file, as stated above, and still required the "Wubi Only" command list

    - Now, you may need to execute "set root=(loop0)", if the
    Code:
    linux /vmlinuz
command isn't working for you. When you type
    Code:
    linux /vml
, you should be able to hit tab for autocompletion. If nothing shows up, this may be an indicator that this is your issue.

    Re: Grub Rescue Prompt Megathread

Hello, I can't install Windows after Ubuntu, I get dropped into grubrescue. Sorry if somebody had the same problem (which apparently nobody in the universe has) but I'm very, very desperate.
