    Yes, thanks.
Both 96 and 173 was installed on my thing.
So I guess I can just uninstall 96 then?

I've also tried 260, 173, and lastly 96, but none works fine with compiz. The only one that works (good resolution) is 173

This should update your grub and then you can reboot into this kernel.

This solved my problem and you can always update to the final 2.6.36 later. Hope this helps!

Hi I tried your method and the installation went perfectly... Even better than the Update Manager... <grin> Thanks for being so detailed.

Currently the 2.6.36 version is out of testing and commited--but not uploaded to the Ubuntu repositories yet. I installed that version:

    linux-image-2.6.36-020636-generic_2.6.36-020636.201010210905_amd64.deb

from the same site, instead of the one you did.

    Results.

I did not have as serious of a problem as many people here reported. When I first installed Maverick on 10-10-2010, everything worked fine and it was very fast. At some point (I think after the kernel upgrade to 2.6.35) my system slowed down considerably. Programs were much slower to load and screen updates were very slow.

Upgrading to 2.6.36 improved program loading a lot, but I haven't tested it long enough to tell if it returned to the original speed. The screen updates are faster--but not near as fast as they were originally.

I think everything is back to normal except the graphics system. I am going to tweak settings, remove and reload the nvidia driver and if that doesn't work install a beta nvidia driver like this guy did:

    http://www.omgubuntu.co.uk/2010/09/n...gy-ubuntu-fix/

the one he describes is the one currently in use by Ubuntu 10.10 but I expect I can find a new alpha or beta nvidia driver.

    Thanks again for the post.

Re: 10.10 runs slow and jerky

The only problem I am having is video issues. Freezing, choppy, crashing, etc. It is just unreal and I have tried everything I have found to try. It does not matter what browser I use or what kernel I try. It is all the same. Why are there so many video issues in ubuntu? It is mind boggling to me. I have reinstalled at least 8 times and all to no avail. I hate Windoze so badly though I'll keep hoping this will eventually get fixed. My last hope was flash aid in ff but it did not help anything. This is nuts in my opinion. Lol

Nvidia just released a new Linux driver for the later model cards.

Perhaps this will solve the problem for some people. I am downloading it now and will install it as soon as I figure out how...

Here is the link for the 64 bit version:

    http://www.nvidia.com/object/linux-d...21-driver.html

This link lets you put in your card and OS and searches for the driver:

    http://www.nvidia.com/Download/Find.aspx?lang=en-us

Make sure you select All or Recommended instead of Beta....

    It's always compositing..
    clear && echo paste url and press enter; read paste; (youtube-dl $paste) | zenity --progress --title="" --text "Downloading, please wait" --auto-close --pulsate && ans=$(zenity --file-selection); gnome-terminal -x mplayer "$ans"

Re: 10.10 runs slow and jerky

Installing the new driver from Nvidia did not help. If anything the system was slower.

If anyone request it I will post a step by step of what I did to install the nvidia driver and what happened. BUT my advice is to wait until it appears in the repositories.

Summary: I previously installed the 2.6.36 kernel and that complicated the installation. After you install the nvidia driver, using the .run file supplied, synaptic does not show that the new nvidia driver is installed and nvidia-settings was not automatically installed. (Also if you have installed the 2.6.36 kernel, synaptic and apt do not show the new kernel either AND packages like linux-sources did not get updated to match the new kernel version.)

    Opinions:

I don't think the slowness is a nvidia nor a kernel issue and don't have a clue as to what it is. I do think it is an interaction problem caused by at "least" 2 different problems or bugs in the 10.10 code.

Other attempts at solving the problem:

I set the swappiness setting to 10 to see if there was a problem with things being incorrectly swapped out using the hard drive instead of memory. That changed nothing.

I turned ipv6 off and blocked the module from loading at boot using blacklist.conf. That changed nothing.

Installing the 2.6.36 kernel helped some but did not fix the problem.

I also tried the other ideas people gave here with no success.

Note that my system is only slow, it is not jerky, so I do not have all the issues that other people do.

Next I am going to start disabling eye candy and if that fails I am going to try to remove compizz and/or install a light weight window manager. I have no need for the windows in gnome to entertain me. All I want is for the windows to do "is not slow down working on the computer", which is not the case currently.

If anything I do changes anything, I will post it.

The only problem I have with 10.10 (both upgrade and fresh install) is with video as well. I have an "old" Gateway GT5252 with AMD Athlon 64 X2 Dual Core Processor, nVidia GeForce 6100 card, 4GB memory. DVD playback in Totem is jittery, almost to the point I get ill watching it. DVD playback in VLC is not too bad but the jitters are still there. I don't watch a lot of DVDs on my computer, but it would be nice if it worked when I feel like watching one.

I've tried the kernel updates suggested in this thread and that has not worked either. When I install, I keep Visual Effects to "None" and test DVD playback, so I'm not sure if compositing is the issue for me.

I may try the new nVidia driver referenced above a little later.

In the meantime, I'm back to 10.04 (with a small partition for 10.10 until I get it figured out . I've been using Ubuntu for over three years and I've learned a lot with it. I have no intention of going back to M$ Windoze.

[Edit] - Well, after reading kwd's last post (#220), I think I'm going to leave things alone for a while and enjoy my Sunday.

Re: 10.10 runs slow and jerky

    You're right.
People have been posting problems, bugs, issues and how to solve some of them here, but most of these problems (as far as I can tell and see from what people here have been saying) they come from all this tweaking around with new kernels and stuff that noobs (or beginners) shouldn't even touch.
So they listen to all this "puppygock" and they end up messing up things that worked before they started doing this.
Now, tweaking and fixing isn't a bad thing. but what I'm saying here is; if you have no idea at all and if you are just blindly listening to what people here suggest, please don't mess around.
I think this is why Microsoft wants to lock their OS and not allow you to do these things.
Not that I wanna turn this in to another Vs. MS thing.
But as long as your system works, just deal with the few problems you have, wait and see if they will fix this problem.
Don't forget, you can end up with a much bigger problem than a slow pc.
At least it goes faster than everything after Windows XP
