Secure? Your personal data visible to mega-corporations is secure?

We pick up the newspaper everyday and read about the continual corruption in big business and in politics, yet despite the daily non-stop evidences of this evil, our society is still willing to blindly trust corporations and government. I can't really understand the logic...

Then people say: "Well, I have nothing to hide." That isn't the issue. The average German citizen had nothing to hide in Nazi Germany, but that didn't prevent the SS from walking in the front door any time they felt like it. If people want to live in a police state because they have "nothing to hide" then that is fine, they can move to North Korea if they like. Just don't bring the police state here.

I won't use no clouds. I've already deleted my Facebook account and I might delete my Gmail account too.

    Good stuff Kvant!

I have been "Facebook free" for about 1 year (useless time-waster). I never signed up for GMail to begin with, due to early reviews that said the advertising was based upon content in your emails.

I think that cloud computing will gain in popularity as smart phones, iPads and other similar devices become more popular.

These devices don't have large storage capacities and being able to store or stream files on the cloud will become very appealing.

This could have some awkward double meanings...

When the Cloud says "no," it doesn't always mean "no."

Encryption may work if all I use the Cloud for is storage. If I use it to host my OS and applications, or use the applications they provide; then, encryption isn't going to help protect my data. For example, I can use Remote Desktop Protocol (RDP) to view what people are doing on any of the computers in my home even if the file-system is encrypted. You might say that I need the User ID and Password to use RDP. To set up an account I have to establish a User ID and Password with the Cloud service provider. How do I know that they are storing the User ID and Password in an encrypted form so that they can't get to it?

Use whatever OS or desktop works for you. Dual boot or use VMs if you want. Backup your computer regularly, and definitely before upgrading, partitioning, or installing an OS.

No support requests by PM please.

I'll never trade in my personal computers for cloud service appliances.
