    Recording "what you hear" sound

I'm trying to make recordings of the sound I hear, but am having trouble. I'm not using a mic, and just want to record what is being to my speaker. Both "Sound Recorder" and audacity aren't working, so I'm guessing that the problem is upstream from both of them. From the volume controller on the panel, under sound preferences, the input options that I have are just a mic 1 and mic 2. Neither work for this capture. I've gone into alsamixer and have turned up Capture, Capture 1, and Digital all the way up.

So, what am I missing? What should I be doing? Any help would be greatly appreciated. Thanks.

Sound Recorder, that is on Ubuntu by default will record anything your speakers play.

Here's a thread with instructions on how to configure Sound Recorder:
