    Learning Ubuntu 101

Newbie here. How does one proceed learning Ubuntu? Senior citizen who has been on WindowsXP for ten years and tired of Windows and all their security updates and money hungry newer version operating systems.

What I find along with others is the people who put the time and energy into this linux project because they believe in it without the $$$ aspect. Kudo's to you all.

I would like to get on board and be able to comfortably make programs work. Right now I cannot get my printer to work! HA!
But again how does one learn this massive undertaking without any knowledge of computer programming and not knowing what a \ or a $ does in a command?

    thanks.

Ok. First, what is your printer? Manufacturer, model, version.

Probably start by reading the thread on the top of the page.
Or download the Ubuntu Pocket guide
As for the printer problem, the best thing that normally works is typing the name and model into google together with ubuntu. This normally gives me the answer to all the issues

The best way to learn depends on you.

    • Some people learn by reading books. There are numerous good Ubuntu books, such as the Ubuntu Manual which is available online for free.
    • Others like to use sites like Psychocats to walk them through the basics.
    • Some people like to dive in and post here when they strike problems.
    • Some folks ask for help from other users on IRC.
    • Some folks just Google whatever questions they have.

    Re: Learning Ubuntu 101

Welcome to the forums and congratulations on making the switch!

Other than these forums (obviously) the two best resources in my opinion are http://help.ubuntu.com and http://wiki.ubuntu.com

    For example:

    https://help.ubuntu.com/community/Printers

One problem you may encounter is that information quickly becomes outdated. I recommend being very cautious of tutorials you find on random websites; you have no way to know if this information is outdated or inaccurate. That is the great thing about these forums: you can ask any question and get an up-to-the-minute answer from real live Ubuntu experts! So I recommend starting a new thread about your printer (be sure to say specifically which model you have) and I'll bet you have the problem fixed within 24 hours.

You might also look into finding a local Linux User's Group (LUG), as well as your regional Ubuntu LoCo. Many states have one, and the LoCo would likely be able to point you to local resources for learning. If you favor live chat, you might also look into IRC. I'd recommend getting started with #ubuntu and your LoCo's channel.

    gumshoegrant,

    Welcome aboard!

    For starters-Ubuntu Manual 10.04: http://ubuntu-manual.org/

Also, I would suggest this sticky by ugm6hr: http://ubuntuforums.org/showthread.php?t=801404 . The links to Psychocats Ubuntu Guide: http://www.psychocats.net/ubuntu/ and Free Ubuntu Pocket Guide by Keir Thomas: http://www.ubuntupocketguide.com/index_main.html are of particular note but the entire sticky is full of a lot of good information.

    Also: http://ubuntuforums.org/showthread.php?t=790485 (Newbie 101) and:
