    Ah, different thread would be best, but in the interestes of the other readers, here the instructions to get and compile SANE from CVS. Yes, you probably need CVS SANE from git to get support for the newer scanners.

    When you run sudo xsane (and accept the risk of running as root) then the console should show pixma module output, including the fact that it could not match the USB ID with any scanner model.

    To get the CVS code, you need git installed. Then you can do inside a source direcftory (I usually use ~/src):

    Code:
    mkdir ~/src
    cd ~/src
    git clone git://git.debian.org/sane/sane-backends.git
    Reference: http://www.sane-project.org/cvs.html

    Go to sane-backends, and try to compile:
    Code:
    cd sane-backends
    BACKENDS="pixma" ./configure
    make
    sudo make install
    I don't know if you will need some dependencies first (like gcc, some parsers maybe, etc.)

    SANE is installed into /usr/local, so it does not overwrite the system SANE. But you may need to always run xsane as sudo to be sure that you access the new pixma libraries.

    so I followed your instructions;

    before make, it advised installed libusb-dev; which I did;

    sudo xsane after the above still produced no devices recognised;

    if you can guide me on what is needed to furnish more information for you

    Did the pixma debug output show that it did not find any matching USB ID, or did it find a matching USB ID but was unable to initialize the device?

    In the former case, you need to install the new code. In the latter case, we need to fix the code for this scanner. For that, one needs to snoop the USB traffic of test scans using a USB sniffer:

    http://www.pcausa.com/Utilities/UsbSnoop/default.htm

    What you do is install it on a Windows XP (not Vista, not 7) system where your Scanner is installed,

    1) start the sniffing,
    2) then use the "replug" function of the software to make the USB initialization occur again (packets will restart at 0 also). You can check this in the log file of the software. Then start up the Canon ScanGear software (or it could be open already) and used the advanced settings:
    3) take the smallest scan (I guess Canon software limits to about 4mm x 4mm) at the lowest resolution (75 dpi for flatbed), in color.
    4) stop the sniffing, and save the log file to something relevant,
    5) use the "delete" function in the software to empty the logfile.

    Then repeat steps 1 to 5 doing a 75 dpi scan in grayscale and monochrome (black and white).

    These three logs should then be compressed with gzip and sent to me by mail (aikishugyo at gmail dot com). Note that if you take a large scan area you won't be able to make the files small enough to attach to email....

    Once these files are understood by me (i.e., we have demonstrated that the above process works to create logs files I can interpret on my side) then we can repeat the above at the higher optical resolutions, which will be multiples of 75: 150, 300, 600, 1200 dpi for this canner.

    The MP280 already works, apparently, up to 600 dpi, so I suppose I only need 1200 dpi scans. However, you need to learn how to use this software first, and we need to prepare a special scan material for the 1200dpi scan (the letters R, G,B written consecutively in their respective colors and scanned), so let's start with 75 dpi.

    Both scanner and printer now works in 12.04!!!

    Thanks a lot!
    Should one download both "common" and "mp280series" files? What about both "cnijfilter" and "scangearamp" variants?

    I personally have installed all 4 deb files and rebooted, although scanning has not gotten to work through Simple Scan -- no perceivable change.

    Great information.
    I just downloaded the drivers from Canon for the printer and the scanner.
    The printer already prints but the scanner does not work yet as I do not know how to install the drivers. Please I need someone to walk me through this.

    Thank you in advance.

    SANE has support for the MP280, so if you install the latest SANE from git you should be able to scan.

    Re: driver for canon pixma mp280 printer

    Hello aikishugyo and everyone else,

    I am getting closer.
    I deleted the printer and scanner drivers I got from Canon and loaded the files from the launchpad Micheal Cruz instead.
    Then I typed in a Terminal "scangearmp" and to my surprise the Canon ScanGear window opened.
    I previewed a document to see if it worked and I got a preview.
    Then I tried a scan and could not get a scan.

    After typing a name for the folder I got: Invalid path
    In save folder: Cannot select a folder. After several tries I was able to enter a name and automatically was able to save a document to the TMP folder.
    I tried to repeat and I cannot get to enter a name again.

    Something not configured right??? I don't know.
    Any sugestions?

    OK,
    Thanks to everyone. Finally figured out how to operate ScanGear.

    You have to preview first and then select where you want the document to go and then hit the scan.

    But , still I cannot get Simple Scan to recognise the scanner.
    Not perfect but I can use the MP280 Scanner.
