Question Re: I upgraded, and now I have this error...

    Sorted with Update Manager...
    Hello all.
I have just tried to "apt-get dist-upgrade" from 8.04., hoping to end up with 10.04
However, the result is I am still running 8.04.
(Synaptic does not show any link to upgrade to 10.04)
    I now only have 2 screen resolutions available, 800 x 600 & 640 x 480, I had the 1280 x 1024 resolution previously.
Some of the packages could not be downloaded, , "--fix missing" made no difference.
Rebooting from cold has not made any difference.

    Help?

I have upgraded my old machine to ubuntu 10.10. I followed a upgrade tutorial found on http://tech.mobiletod.com/how-to-upg...-ubuntu-10-10/ . They provided detailed steps about everything on Ubuntu 10.10

    gdm binary 1816
    failed to acquire org.gnome.DisplayManager
    gdm-binary 1816
could not acquire name bailing out

After the upgrade reboots wouldn't deliver a graphical interface, I couldn't gdm restart. Fortunately pressing ESC at reboot gets me to into Grub where I select a previous working kernel 2.6.32-35-generic-pae and a working graphical interface. I could then removed the third party NVIDIA driver and rebooted into 2.6.35-22-generic-pae with low resolution graphics. Finally I re-installed the recommended NVIDIA driver. Phew it's working again.

Re: I upgraded, and now I have this error...

Since upgrading from 10.04 to 10.10 I get this same message twice:

modprobe:FATAL: could not load /lib/modules/2.6.35-22-generic/modules.dep No such file or directory

It then hangs for a good 20secs or so before booting to Ubuntu.

I also have to put my password into Keyring now whereas before I didn't - this is very annoying.

    Ideas?

How does the system behave if you try the tests described in the first post?

Don't use this space for a list of your hardware. It only creates false hits in the search engines.

Re: I upgraded, and now I have this error...

I didn't think them pertinent. I had a working system with 10.04. I did the recommended thing and did a network upgrade. I received no alerts during the procedure, I have changed nothing since. <headscratching>

PS I resolved the keyring issue by stopping a bunch of startup apps.

Edit: Seems there is a bug, just checked the launchpad site: https://bugs.launchpad.net/ubuntu/+s...ux/+bug/642421

Re: I upgraded, and now I have this error...

I have upgraded from 10.04 to 10.10. However, on the first go around I terminated the upgrade before it was finished. I was able to go back to an old version and the upgrade restarted and terminated properly, I think.

I have two problems at this point.

First, the system always boots into tty mode rather than graphics mode. How do I change this?

Second, when I run the failsafe graphics mode, it appears that my nvidia xconfiguration file is missing or otherwise corrupt. So I can't get my monitor into the correct resolution. How do I fix this.

    Thanks for your help.

Re: I upgraded, and now I have this error...

Can anyone clarify the position of WUBI upgrades from 10.04 to 10.10 where legacy GRUB is still used in 10.04 and where WUBI is installed on the Windows partition? I have followed all the bugs including #653134 and it seems that these are essentially issues with GRUB 2.

So, unless the upgrade changes legacy GRUB to GRUB 2 there should be no problem? I have not tested an upgrade yet. Has anyone been brave enough?

Exclamation Re: I upgraded, and now I have this error...

I upgraded, from 10.04 to 10.10... I installed the new grub I dual boot 7 and Ubuntu...

so.. When I goto boot into Ubuntu (which was successfully installed).. it is terribly dark.. and cranking up the brightness/contrast does nothing..

I can login.. (if u look closely enough.. but.. from then I can't do anything (possibly due to the fact that I can BARELY see anything)..

    any ideas?
