Let's try booting from the rescue prompt:
If that fails, try these for the linux and initrd lines:Code:set prefix=(hd0,5)/boot/grub set root=(hd0,5) insmod (hd0,5)/boot/grub/linux.mod linux (hd0,5)/vmlinuz root=/dev/sda5 ro initrd (hd0,5)/initrd.img boot
I'll be resuming my vacation but will check the thread tomorrow...Code:linux (hd0,5)/boot/vmlinuz-2.6.38-8-generic root=/dev/sda5 ro initrd (hd0,5)/boot/initrd.img-2.6.38-8-generic

Let's try booting from the rescue prompt:
Code:
set prefix=(hd0,5)/boot/grub set root=(hd0,5) insmod (hd0,5)/boot/grub/linux.mod linux (hd0,5)/vmlinuz root=/dev/sda5 ro initrd (hd0,5)/initrd.img boot
The above did not work.... error "Gave up waiting for root device"
ALERT! /dev/sda5/ does not exist. Dropping to a shell!
Could someone following this thread get me back to the original boot / Grub?
At least before I started down this path I had access to an older version of Ubuntu and my Windows, now zero!
Seems my benefactor has returned to his vacation!
Thanks for your assist
For now, doing a full image restore back to windows on my HD. I'll be replacing this machine soon and when that happens will put Ubuntu on it again as a stand alone. Clearly for me at least dual boot system carries far too much risk of lost time and file access.
The interactive stability is not there at this time. (should have left well enough alone) was enjoying 10.10.
Windows is not my favorite that is certain, but it's the enemy I know!
See you all again soon I'm sure. PS I didn't realize that this upgrade had just arrived. Had I known that I would have never pressed the upgrade button. To the rest of you intrepid explorers, "Onward!" Kaizen!
Thanks again for trying.
I'm still checking on the thread, just not as often as normal. Sorry I can't provide more timely inputs.
If you are still trying to resolve this let me know. It appears you have given up on this installation.
The one avenue I'd investigate is whether your BIOS can see the entire 200GB. When I asked about the *.mod files, were you checking from the grub prompt or looking at the /boot/grub folder from the LiveCD or Maverick?
Also, at the initramfs prompt, you could run this command to see if the system can see the sda5 partition at all:
Code:ls /dev/sd* /dev/disk/by-uuid

It appears the Natty partner repository is causing an error. Open Synaptic (System Settings (top right icon), Synaptic). Settings, Repositories, Other Software tab. Untick the Canonical Partners tab(s). Press 'Reload' or close Synaptic and run "sudo apt-get update".
If you don't get the error again, re-enable the Partners repositories if desired.

Would a moderator please point me toward an authoritative essay on a beginners level about how to respond to messages and choices given DURING the upgrade process. I know that at one point I was presented with a scroll box presenting four or five different options, none of which meant anything to me. I selected what I hoped was the default and plunged ahead. I would like to see a discussion of the pros and cons of all the choices one is likely to encounter during the upgrade process.
