Question nvidia to ATI upgrade, no video at login

This is probably not too bad, but I don't know what I'm doing, I've searched and still don't know what I'm doing.

Been using Ubuntu for a year or so, so not a complete newbie but still a lot I don't know.

Today my ancient old nvidia based card upped and died, so keen to get it sorted asap off I went to Maplin and returned with the only card which wasn't a complete rip-off compared to buying online.

I'm now the (proud?) owner of a ATI Radeon HD 5550. So I got it fitted and powered on, bios screens OK, ubuntu splash screens / and missing external drive message OK. Once it gets to the login screen the video dies (no signal on monitor). Tried DVI & VGA and found a really old monitor in a cupboard all with the same result.

I can use recovery mode but don't know what I should being doing to sort this presumably driver related issue out. Running 11.04 64 bit

Can someone point me in the right direction please.
