    Troll post:pidgin vs empathy

    Hi All,

Ubuntu has adopted Empathy instead of Pidgin for 10.04. Six monsths later.......Are you using Empathy? How did Empathy evolve after Canonical had it as default IM?

Do u see any great future for Empathy, or was it just a wrong decision?

PS: I am a Pidgin user, my dad is a Empathy user. Empathy is a great "promise", i have no doubts: it is simple and also easy(simple again)...., but it lacks some basic **for me** things....

I gave Empathy a try and found the transition from Pidgin seamless and the interface nice, so I decided to keep it. Overall I like it, it feels somehow better integrated with the whole Ubuntu Gnome desktop. I only use it rarely though, and I could be failing to notice some great or missing feature.

I have never used an IM or social client.

Empathy > Pidgeon in Ubuntu. It just fits all so nice and snugly. Well done Ubuntu team IMHO.

I used pidgin then empathy when it switched as default and then went back to pidgin , but since empathy doesn't pop up on new messages and the mail notification is the same as a new email , I was constantly missing messages , doesn't happen with pidgin as it pops up

Yeah, the main issue is that Empathy just doesn't get in my face with new messages, which I need it to. I'm not going to click twice to get to something that used to be automatic.

Why should I? Really, think about this from a practical mindset. That's a ton of work for something that used to just happen.

I'm fine with that being the default, but why isn't the option even there? Could it be that difficult to program automatic popping up a new message?

But yeah, so long as Empathy can do all Pidgin can from a practical standpoint, I'm fine with it. But why use something that's inconvenient? My parents have constantly complained about Empathy and asked for something else. People don't like that behavior, they like to be interrupted when their IM is on and set to Online.

But yes, Empathy is still very nice, I don't doubt that. I used it for a week before I gave up on the clicking twice every time I got a new message from a conversation I'd closed. It just doesn't mesh well with me.

That's my main issue with Gnome applications in general. They aren't always as flexible as they probably should be. I don't think any default will satisfy everyone, but if I can tweak it to work the best for me, that's what I want.

Pidgin > Empathy in my opinion. I just prefer it. Personal Choice.

Well, should we do a simple side by side comparison of features, from people on different sides of preferences? Should it be extensive, or only highlight the main features and abilities?

I think it'd be nice to get them together like that so we can see what we CAN do with them in the first place, since many people are unaware of the extent to which they can customize their IM client, but it'd be nice to just admit where the faults are so we can focus on what to improve.

    Seriously, we should.
