Wireless Shows Connected, But No Internet/Can't Ping Router

So I installed 10.4 on a new Toshiba Satellite L645D
When I connect to my wireless at home, the Network Manager shows that I am connected but I can't reach any websites via ping or firefox. I also can't ping my router. I also don't have wired access working at all.

iwconfig shows connected to correct ESSID
    I can ping localhost

    can't ping google:
    Code:
    ping: unknown host www.google.com
    can't ping my router (192.168.2.1):
    Code:
    connect: Network is unreachable
    lspci shows:
    Code:
02:00.0 Network Controller: Realtek Semiconductor Co., Ltd. Device 8172 (rev 10)
08:00.0 Ethernet Controller: Atheros Communications AR8152 v1.1 Fast Ethernet (rev c1)
    ip rou:
    Code:
169.254.0.0/16 dev wlan0 proto kernel scope link src 169.254.8.6
    cat /etc/resolv.conf
    Code:
    #Generated by Network Manager
    nameserver 208.67.222.222
    nameserver 208.67.220.220
    domain Belkin
    search Belkin
    nameserver 192.168.2.1
The two addresses at the top of this are from me trying various things to fix this but now I can't figure out how to edit it again. It's shown as read only even if I do sudo gedit, sudo vim, sudo su gedit.

Sorry to have such a long post but I figured these were a few of the commands I've seen elsewhere so I figured I'd just post them right off the bat. Also I'm copying the output of these commands to a computer which has internet access so there is small chance of typos.

I'm more familiar with ifconfig -a - if it shows an IP address of 169.254.X.X, then avahi has stepped in to "help". DHCP seems to have failed, but avahi provided an IP address (which is somewhat useless).

    Thanks for your response.

    results of ifconfig:

    Code:
    wlan0:avahi Link encap:Ethernet HWaddr 70:f1:a1:e6:5b:24
        inet addr:169.254.8.6 Bcast:169.254.255.255 Mask:255.255.0.0
        UP BROADCAST MULTICAST MTU:1492 Metric:1
        Interrupt:16 Memory:f8308000-f8308100
I'm not familiar with avahi at all.

Re: Wireless Shows Connected, But No Internet/Can't Ping Router

I installed 10.10 on my machine and still have the same problem except that now a wired connection is possible.

    ifconfig wlan0

    Code:
    wlan0 Link encap:Ethernet HWaddr 70:f1:a1:e6:5b:24
              inet addr:192.168.2.4 Bcast:192.168.2.255 Mask:255.255.255.0
              inet6 addr: fe80::72f1:a1ff:fee6:5b24/64 Scope:Link
UP BROADCAST RUNNING MULTICAST MTU:1492 Metric:1
              RX packets:35 errors:0 dropped:0 overruns:0 frame:0
              TX packets:48 errors:0 dropped:0 overruns:0 carrier:0
              collisions:0 txqueuelen:1000
              RX bytes:9656 (9.6 KB) TX bytes:10257 (10.2 KB)
              Interrupt:16 Memory:f85d0000-f85d0100
I'm not familiar with networking at all but I think it may be a dns issue from what I've seen in various places. If anyone could offer some ideas it would be great. Also, since I have the luxury of at least a wired connection I can at least easily download packages and whatnot as well as post the entire the output of commands.

    UPDATE:

If I have the internet connected via a wire, then unplug the wire and reconnect to the wireless signal, I have wireless access to the internet until reboot apparently. Again, I know little of Networking but surely this some sort of flag?

Re: Wireless Shows Connected, But No Internet/Can't Ping Router

    pl try this
Remove ethernet cable and try whether pages are loading .If not
Right-click on the NM icon(on top right of the panel) and then click on Edit Connections.
Select the tab wireless-add-ipv4-select automatic(DHCP)addresses only-give DNS as 4.2.2.1 then apply
If this is not working pl post output of
    Code:
    cat /etc/network/interfaces

Re: Wireless Shows Connected, But No Internet/Can't Ping Router

Changing the DNS to 4.2.2.1 appears to have solved the problem. Thank you very much for the help! Could you offer any insight as to what exactly was happening and why that fixed it?

Re: Wireless Shows Connected, But No Internet/Can't Ping Router

This is what I have learned.
In older linux versions IP configuration was done by editing /etc/network/interfaces and DNS in /etc/resolv.conf (GUI method https://help.ubuntu.com/community/NetworkAdmin)
Latest versions use Networkmanager .The file is found in /etc/NetworkManager/system-connections forexample as Auto eth0
Since you were able to ping 4.2.2.1 (an open DNS)but not google.com a DNS issue was suspected and using an open DNS worked. You can try any DNS(open or ISP maintained or your gateway IP ie 192.168.2.1)
