I have done that with the alternate upgrade cd, dunno if the regula cd works the same, but what I did was boot into the 9.04, put the disc in, and a messsage popped up saying a disc with updates (or upgrades) has been detected, and it gave me options, to do nothing, or to start package manager. I chose package manager, and followed the prompts, upgraded no problem, didn't even spill a drop of data or beer.
I think you cannot directly upgrade from 9.04 to 10.04
You have to upgrade to 9.10 first and then to 10.04
Life never ends until you have nothing to posses
Download the 9.10 alternate CD and the 10.04 alternate CD and then follow the following guide:

When all is said and done, you have probably used far longer time upgrading than it would have taken to do a clean install - which is also safer, by the way
