    10.4 LTS 64 bit - easiest way to set default runlevel 3

    New (ish) to Ubuntu.....

    What is the easiest, minimal step process to set boot to runlevel 3. Preferably without have to run telnit? or editing multiple files. Is there a one step process for this? I don't even need a gui, just please let me know the key file to edit without have to edit 3-7 other files,

    thanks in advance...

    -Cheers

    edit /etc/default/grub

    GRUB_CMDLINE_LINUX_DEFAULT="quiet splash"
    to
    GRUB_CMDLINE_LINUX_DEFAULT="single"

    and then sudo update-grub

    When you have time / FYI :

    Unlike some distro, run levels are uniform in Ubuntu , 2 = 3 = 4 = 5, have been for a long time now, ever since the beginning as far as I can recall.

    Second, Ubuntu uses upstart.

    Last, why did you install a GUI if you do not need one I would remove it or install the server edition.

    Re: 10.4 LTS 64 bit - easiest way to set default runlevel 3

    well here is my reasoning....Keep in mind I am new to linux ans started in February....

    1. If I mess something up, like say my video card driver as an example, I can still go in and fix what I need to fix.

    2. I want my GUI

    3. I am learning linux, so tryingto gt in the habit of navigating throughout the CL.

    ...so with all of that being said, if 2=3=4=5, than what is the best way to achieve my goal of booting to a command line without startig the X system...???

    -cheers

    Personally I would disable GDM .

    Alternately, use Ctrl-Alt-F1 to change to a tty , ctrl-alt-f7 returns you to your graphical interface.

    There's more than a few ways to do this. Here's the old fashion way.

    sudo update-rc.d -f gdm remove

    Should do the trick.

    To get it going again.

    sudo update-rc.d -f gdm defaults

    and

    start x&

    Think this method still works haven't used it for ages though.

    fixed!

    single = boot in single user mode, a.k.a Recovery Mode ~= root

    text = don't start gdm, kdm... = disable (Upstart compatible) display manager(s).

    Yep, runlevels are still emulated by Upstart and runlevel 2, 3, 4, and 5 are equivalent by default.

    True! =)

    False, gdm is now managed by an upstart job & NOT by a System-V style init script.

    What are the odds of getting an adequate GUI if your having driver problems?
