    Question Nettop Buying / Building

    Hi,

I am looking for some suggestion on which nettop to buy (or perhaps build).

    My requirements are as follows:

    - Machine will mainly be used for web browsing, listening to music, web development and software development. I will occasionally watch videos on it, but I am not really looking for a media centre PC.

    - I want the machine to be fairly expandable and easy to tinker with.

    - Happy to build the machine myself, however, this would be my first computer build.

    - Needs to be able to run Ubuntu / Kubuntu / Xubuntu well, preferably without the need for proprietary video drivers.

    - Want the system to be very quiet and have fairly low power consumption.

    - Has to be available in the UK. Looking to pay around £250 (max £300).

So far the only thing I have found is this Zotac that seems to have got a good review (as a linux box) earlier this year.

Any suggestions would be much appreciated!

the zotac unit is in the realm of the micro pc
this is a good choice for a low power consumption device
    and a reasonable price
though there is very little you could upgrade (hdd, memory, cpu)
my only concern with this one is the power pack
they should be placed so they have adequate room for air around them
if possible place it on a small raised grid so air can circulate underneath.
preventing heat buildup will make these last a long time.

for other types refer to the hardware compatibility list of the distro you want!
the list will have equipment that has been tested and proven with the distro
too much blood in my caffeine system and a coffee cup the size of a wading pool!

    Thanks for the reply.

Unless I am reading the wrong list, the Ubuntu Hardware Compatibility List isn't very helpful (not many machines are listed, most tested on old versions of Ubuntu). I tried HCL too, but its pretty poor as well.
