10.04 /proc/asound disappeared

I am in serious trouble.


The sound suddenly switched to dummy output again. Last time this happened, I simply reinstalled Alsa using AlsaupgradeScript.sh

When I tried
aplay -l
the output was:
aplay: device_list:235: no soundcards found..


So.. i tried using the AlsaupgradeScript.sh using the -c switch, which gave me a

So, I went through some of the helps available in internet. Then i used this:

cat /proc/asound/version
cat: /proc/asound/version: No such file or directory

I realized that I don't have any asound folder inside /proc when i browsed it via nautilus and terminal.

I am using acer aspire 4745

I also tried using OSS, which worked. But I didn't feel that it was flexible enough. for example , I had to manually change whether the output will be given in both internal and external devices or something like that.


Can someone please help?

Alright. I am confused.

The sound is back. But i am not sure what made it come back. I did 3 things.

1. I edited /etc/modprobe.d/alsa-base.conf and added options snd-hda-intel model=auto
2. I reverted the latest Alsa Installation, using sudo ./AlsaUpgrade-1.0.23-2.sh -r
3. I rebooted plugging out the headphone from the headphone-in port.

Now I can only listen to sounds using the internal speakers. And when I plugin the headphone, it neither speaker nor headphone works.

BTW, now the aplay -l gives

I am going to reinstall the latest Alsa Files again.... wish me luck If it creates problem again.... I will stick to speakers >.<

I had this problem occur today. I am using speakers plugged into the external output jack on the front panel of my computer. But the output worked fine. Then I plugged a mic (AudioTechnica) into the front panel jack. I changed settings in the admin dialog for sound control and using sound recorder to test lost the device and everything else related to sound.

I tried unplugging the mic and no luck. A reboot (with or without the mic plugged in) makes the sound card get recognized again and output works. Went to sound recorder to check the mic and again lost the hardware. I did a hardware check and the audio out and in failed.

I may try more, but right now, just the reboot fixes it.
