If you don't mind looking like a fraud, get a free domain over at CO.CC.

I thought they were awesome. Most of my support tickets were answered in about 5 minutes, and the techs always knew what they were talking about. Sites were pretty reliable; and the one time *I* overloaded the shared server they helped me implement some caching to make it speeder. Compare that to other hosts that will just tell you to go elsewhere if you do something wrong.

As for linode, see for yourself. $20 for a 512MB VPS (what I'm on) is pretty competitive, and I haven't found many other hosts that offer the same level of features for that price. (If anyone's thinking of signing up with Linode and doesn't mind helping me out, let me know and I'll give you a referral. I get a $20 credit towards the next bill. )

I use hosting24 because I'm a newb, and it's been easy for me to use.

I at first registered my domain at nic.cz.cc, but I recently decided (two days ago) to buy my own domain. I bought the domain qu404.com for $17.49 ($10 for the .com domain + $6.49 for WHOIS privacy + $1 sales tax) at www.domain.com (what a GREAT URL for a site for buying domain names!) and have it hosted at 0000free on their Epic server. The hosting is free, but the domain is not.

Personally I couldn't be happier with my host. Their service is amazing for a free host and they give so many options for me when building my site. Support is amazing too; I have yet to see a faster response time than their Systems Operator (or SysOp)
