    Question Toshiba A505-S6015

I have had this laptop since MARCH 2010, and I have just gotten around to trying UBUNTU on it. I have tried booting off the 32-bit and the 64-bit 10.04 CDs that I have, and I have two problems.

    1) the 32-bit CD boots and begins looking at the hardware and gets to a screen where it freezes and I have left it sitting 30+ minutes and it never goes further - never an error message. The last two lines on the display are as follows:

    [0.603050] [<c07a3308>] ? kernel_init+0x0/0xbf
    [0.603113] [<c0104087>] kernel_thread_helper=0x7/0x10

It stops with those as the last two lines on the screen - and goes no further. I decided to try my 64-bit CD.

    2) the 64-bit machine boots up. I get a purplish screen with a disk icon = 'little person in a circle' icon and then the screen goes blank - with a quick flash of init..... {something} then another blank black screen and a flashing cursor and it just sits there (i left it for over 30 mins).

I am currently just trying to see if this laptop will run in EVAL MODE (off the DVD) and what problems I might have with it. Here are the hardware specs (narrowed down) for my machine:
