    Logout/Shut down Button "Greyed" Out

I'm running Ubuntu 10.2 running Gnome. I have notice the last couple of times I have started my desktop that the Shut Down button is greyed out, the button does not respond when the mouse goes over it nor to being clicked. When this happens I remove the non-functioning button and add it again fresh and the following restart it happens all over again. I added this button manually to a panel by right-clicking on it and selecting "Shut Down" in the first menu that appears.

I am also seeing this issue. Pressing the hardware power button performs correctly (brings up the same dialog as the GUI button should, and
    Code:
    sudo shutdown -h now
also works, but I think that this is a defect.
