Now maybe Linux will get somewhere

This if anything is what linux needs to get somewhere.

India has come up with the world's cheapest "laptop", a touchscreen computing device that costs $35 (£23).

"Sibal said the Linux-based device was expected to be introduced to higher education institutions from 2011 and the aim was to drop the price further to $20, and ultimately to $10."

I wonder if the guy speaking at the press conference works for a few dollars a day.

No. The guy is also one of country's top lawyer and a t0ol (in that order). He makes enough money to buy few islands in Carribean.

BTW this is not the first Linux tablet to come out of the country. Simputer was probably the first one but fell flat because lack of support and marketing. But this one looks better.

Finally some specs. 2gb of ram isnt bad, unless they confused ram with hard drive like they often do.

This is total vapourware. Even in large volumes, the components cost a lot more than $35. Anybody priced 2 GB of memory lately?

According to the article comments, apparently it's <$5.

Oh an IPad ("I" stands for India ). Looks cool and it's dirt cheap, if it works as advertised, this is awesome.

Linux is already "somewhere" - it runs a huge number of servers and embedded devices.

Plus it runs quite a few desktops too.

The barrier to Linux adoption has never been cost...
