Please do all requests through Launchpad!

    Greetings, Backports Community:

First off, I'd like to apologize for my lack of work recently. Right now is basically full gear FIRST Robotics work for me, especially now that we've won a Regional Chairmans and Woodie Flowers award (the two highest awards for students and mentors, respectively). This should all be wrapping up in a month or so, after which my summer vacation starts and I'll have a lot more spare time!

So, as far as Backports, my recent overload has caused me to realize that there's no way I can handle Backports requests and testing all by myself. Also, when trying to do a lot of backports at the same time, I found I was spending more time manipulating forum threads than actually doing Backports work. Both of these issues have made me want to switch over to Launchpad.

That brings me to the next point: Launchpad. I'd like to handle bug reports and requests through launchpad. Launchpad provides a common ground for developers (not all of which frequent the forum or have moderator access needed to manipulate the current system) to work and communicate. It's much more efficient for me to work with, and it makes it easier to establish workflow relationships between Backports and upstream. I know this requires some of you to go out and create yourself a launchpad account, but the LP system is such a core component of Ubuntu's community that, in my opinion, everyone who uses Ubuntu should have an account there. If you have any complaints or questions about this, feel free to reply. You can still feel free to ask for help or even make requests here. (I'd recommend requesting support from the forums, and requesting and bug reporting via Launchpad.)

I am still accepting requests for Breezy Backports, and now's a great time to look through your previous (unfulfilled; ) requests and figure out what you'd like to get for Breezy while Dapper is in peak of stability during the development cycle.

    Submitting Details
For now, report everything as a "bug". Have a good summary that will tell me quickly what's requested. (i.e. "Please backport Bittornado", "Bittornado backport crashes on startup") Fill in the report with a more detailed description of the problem. If it's a request, indicate current Breezy version, and version being requested. If you've checked, indicate if the requested version has entered Dapper to make our lives easier! If you're reporting a bug in Backports, specify what package version specifically you're using (i.e. 3.10.13-2~breezy1) along with the information you'd typically put in a detailed bug report (reproducing steps, etc)

After submitting, please tweak the severity by clicking the drop-down arrow or the orange area that says "breezy backports". Please use good judgement when doing so!

For requests, if it's an urgent one (i.e. fixes a security problem), mark it as Normal or Major. If it's less urgent, prioritize it to your judgement. For bug reports, if it's a massive breakage, feel free to use a higher urgency. If it's just a minor inconvenience, use lower severities. Abusing severity ratings will only cause us to start ignoring them, which will lower response times overall.

Thanks for everyone's support and patience, and I hope the changes are acceptable to all.

Sure, if the package you want backported is already in Edgy.

Developers are still "recovering" from the Paris summit, so Edgy development might still be a bit slow.

I've found that some of the upstream guys like Daniel Holbach are willing to issue Edgy sync requests to the archive team for newer versions if I file a launchpad ticket for them to do so, and as a result if you have a really urgent request (like a program in Universe severely crippled or not working at all), you can try filing it right now. Just make note that it is of high importance.
