Arrow Only getting 1mbps on wifi card on ubuntu full speed on windows xp

I've recently installed ubuntu 10.04 LTS on my computer which is dual-booting with windows xp. When I run Linux, my wifi card is automatically detected and I'm able to get online but only with a 1mbps connection, which is unimpressive considering it runs at normal speed (54mbps) on windows xp. Since it is automatically detected, I don't think I really need ndiswrapper or madwifi installed as it is simply a configuration problem?

Pardon my potential ignorance as I am still a linux noob.

    I am using a netgear 108mbps WG11T card.

    Any help is GREATLY appreciated
